Hear, hear. I've been bitten by this one. Regardless of the reason for
which you are ostensibly withholding payment of tax, it isn't legal, and
you will accrue penalties of 1% per calendar month, plus possibly a
large fine, and legal costs should the Revenue Commissioners sue you.
Even putting your assets into the name of your spouse and declaring
bankruptcy isn't protection against the Revenue Commissioners as
evidenced by the recent court case (cf Irish Times law reports a few
weeks back) where the transfer of assets was deemed a "contract impeding
the administration of justice" and declared invalid.
