UML (user mode linux) is also worth trying, plus it's free.
Also once you get it on, and you want to try a service,
or maybe kernel upgrade etc...do it in your virtual
machine first. Plus you could do clusters on one machine
if you really wanted to, so you can experiment with
no cost but your own time.
Also once you get more comfortable, you could look at
bytemark.co.uk for a virtual machine to play with.
