Unless this retired school teacher likes to frag things, X support
will be fine - XFree's nv 2D driver works grand, as does its radeon
driver[1].
One thing, if the distro's desktop automatically sets up a
screensaver, make sure to disable the opengl screensavers before you
leave[3]. ;) Otherwise she'll complain that the machine freezes
whenever she leaves it alone for a while.. :)

1. At least, nv worked fine with some kind of recent NVidia Quadro
something or another[2], and the radeon driver works fine with my
R280 (and should support the R3xx chips too, just without hardware
3D).
2. Well, worked fine a normal monitor, didnt at all like my LCD,
which apparently is an NVidia BIOS problem which occurs on windows
too (according to the maker of the LVDS->DVI convertor box for my
LCD).
3. Unless it happens to be a radeon R1xx or R2xx, which do have
hardware 3D, thanks to the the weather channel (iirc - dave arlied
covered history on list before i think).
