Traditional roller ball mice seem to have a limited lifespan. Bite the bullet
and get yourself an optical mouse... runs smoothly for years.

Way I've usually read of is to put mouse ball in warm water, [washing-up
liquid in water], and leave there for few mins, give quick clean in
water, and let it dry naturally.
