Probably the Mandrake box isn't running hotplug, have you checked?
Also, if it works with the FC1 box, then most likely it is a driver problem
when you start to get the bad probe results on plugging in a USB key, where
another box, with a different kernel doesn't have this problem.
Get 2.6.8, I'd say this problem gets magiced away.
