On one of my machines anyway :) 

They can also be useful for render accel and Xv on older nvidia/ati
equipped boxes.

It's a nasty catch-22 alright. How do gamers support Linux aware
companies like id/bioware if we've got to use binary-only drivers, it
sure cheapens the message!
