As long as he didn't suggest you use the radeon driver. As for the vesa 
driver, you will be limited to vesa modes, so no 1920x1200, or 1024x480, 
or anything else weird.

At a guess because it has detected the panel dimensions as something else?

Or maybe because 400x300 requires doubling, and that can't be done with 
the panel?
