Funny that Dermot, becuase.

I'm not the person who is having a personal go at you, however, I've not used
profanity in deference to you, nor have I made any allusions (based on fact or
not) to your skills.

If you had read the thread, and you seemed to suggest you hadn't, but, unlike
yourself and Paul I'll not call 'bullshit' since I can't prove otherwise, you'd
realise that we were talking about the availabilty of a graphics card in
Tralee, with an Open source driver.. and whether I not _I_ had sufficiently
satisifed _Paul_ that I'd looked for a card, before buying a card with a closed
source driver. Essentially that's what the ... discussion was about.

As opposed to what you complained about _the quality of my technical advice_.

Just for clarity "you didn't look hard enough for a graphics driver " == Paul's
reasoning for "calling bullshit", "I think you're technical advice is poor" ==
Dermot's reasoning for calling bullshit.. you are both perfectly entitled to
your opinions.. however..

To quote you:

 >In fact I suspect that poor advice was what kicked off the recent
 >nvidia conflagration.

Would indicate that you "hadn't" in the least read the thread... because
ostensibly the *entire* thing move from some sort of accusation by Paul, to a
theoretical discussion of what sort of propiatery code was acceptable in the
Linux paradigm.

I'd really personally love it, if the list (could) remain on a technical
footing.. but, quite frequently, it seems to get dragged a long, long way away
from that, into some kind of senseless personal crap.

Fortunately I'm a big boy and I've been using Linux for a while, so a few
trolls in the woodwork flaming me occasionally .. I can just about handle...
but, if I was some 15 year old kid, who was new to Linux (we had one here
recently.. who got shot down with ignomy, for the _crime_ of being different
from the inbred ILUG troll, and I suspect *won't* come back here, because of
it)... the kind of treatment I suspect he/she/they would eventually incur
around here, would _not_ be conducive to speading Linux... a goal we're _all_
supposed to share.

To be honest the LUG is about the last place I'd point a newbie becuase of
it... I'd be afraid about, what might happen to the uninitiated... or perhaps
someone who would not be perpaired for an essentially foundationless tirade, as
is the result .. frequently on the LUG. Stupid semantic arguments that
completely _ruin_ the entire thing. I personally won't be bullied by it and you
can deny it as much as you like, but, it exists and it _diminishes_ the lits's
effectiveness. For this reason, I think the list should be moderated, but,
obviously.. that would take all the fun out of it, for the trolls. So I think
it would be quicker.. to simply put up a "go away" sign on the main page... it
would certianly be more _honest_ about the treatement a newbie will get around
here.

Honestly, if you want to leave the list, because you incorrectly asserted the
context of the pervious thread, leading me to say (paraphrasing) "you mustn't
have read it" then I can't stop you.

I would personally say again, that if I were younger, or perhaps less
experienced at the sort of unchecked and quite infintile abuse regularly given
out in internet places... that the treatment I have gotten recently from Paul
and yourself would turn me running away from the "community" which surrounds Linux.

Fortunately I enjoy the technical aspects ... but, as a technical list, I think
_this_ LUG, has too many people who are here much too long, and are much too
hostile to those who they don't personally know and are thus intolerant and
frequently jump to conclusions... as if asserting some sort of ludicrous
territorality.. which is in _complete_ contravention to any pretence as a
'technical' list... and it _sure as hell_ won't help newbies nor will it help
in any meaningful sense the uptake of Linux.

That's _my_ opinion... that's why.. while there maybe lots of skillful people
on ILUG the troll factor essentially reduces the nexus of talent factor
'frequently' to nil.

If your choice is to 'sulk'... then that is your choice, but, please, don't try
to use me as an excuse.
