These new fangled games really do require top end gear so!
I downloaded the doom3 demo (500 odd MB), went to run it and it tells
me:
Couldn't get a visual

i.e.: my machine is too crap. It seems that a Gforce3Ti is now low end
hardware.
The README states:
GNU/Linux system,
Pentium III, 1Ghz
256Mb RAM
Kernel 2.4, 2.6 is recommended
glibc 2.2.4 and up
3D card:
NV10 or R200 minimum hardware
OpenGL hardware acceleration
64 MB VRAM
So going by that, its really GPU intensive as opposed to CPU.
I may ask Santy for a new board after all.
Now does anybody have any idea as to what OSS card will run new games @
playstation frame rates?
I see no point in upgrading the GPU if it will not run the latest
goodies.
The only card I know of that is equivalent or better than the one I
currently run is the Voodoo5 series of cards. I had one until my brother
"borrowed" it.
p.s.: I do agree that getting graphics manufacturers to OSS their wares
would be the ideal situation. I am not in any way against that
philosophy.
