Assumptions are dangerous things. Had a look at this last night, and I
resolved it by changing the DefaultColorDepth setting in xorg.conf from
16 to 24. Bloody impenetrable error messages.
Also watch out for the permissions problem whereby /dev/nvidia0
and /dev/nvidiactl are mode 600 by default. You'll need to set these to
666 to play as a normal user.
