 nope.  it is running.
 (I admit I didn't say that directly in my original post,
 but it was about the first thing I checked as soon as I
 suspect aRts; and I implied it with comments saying that
 `artsplay' &tc seemed to be do what was expected --- just
 no sound!)

 not surprising.  the e-address somehow conjured up is
 neither the `Reply-To' nor what is in my .signature.
