Which is exactly what it was. The firewire converter is relatively old
(it is an oldish LaCie Firewire/USB case which had a CD burner
installed. I retrofitted an IDE cradle to it (because I had a couple of
them handy) so I could easily change drives). So it turns out that the
LaCie firmware must have the same issues as a lot of PC BIOS had. I put
the disk into a newer Firewire-IDE converter and it shows up with its
full capacity. Ah well. I will use it only with smaller disks.
