[ILUG] Re: Oracle and best Filesystem?

Conor,

I am running Oracle Applications 11.5.10 (DB version 9.2.0.5) on Red Hat
EL 3.0 (Taroon Update 3) for test and internal training pourposes. The
filesystem is ext3.

Ext2 was the default file system under the 2.2 kernel.
The ext2 filesystems countaining a journal, which are also sometimes
known as ext3 filesystems. It has good performance characteristics
and is the default file system for RedHat AS distribution

Oracle recommends the following filesystems:
Single node: ext3, raw, NFS-based storage systems (e.g. NetApp)
Multi-node (RAC): OCFS, raw, NFS-based storage systems (e.g. NetApp)

Compatibility Matrix for Linux, Filesystem & I/O Type

RedHat AS/ES 3.0
================

------|------------------|-------------|------------
RDBMS | File System Type | I/O Type | Supported
------|------------------|-------------|------------
9iR2 | ext2/ext3 | Async I/O | Yes (***)
       |------------------|-------------|------------
       | raw | | Yes (***)
       | OCFS | | No(*)(***)
       | NFS | | No
       |------------------|-------------|------------
       | ext2/ext3 | Direct I/O | Yes
       |------------------|-------------|------------
       | raw | | Yes
       | OCFS | | Yes
       | NFS | | Yes (**)
------|------------------|-------------|------------

------|------------------|-------------|------------
RDBMS | File System Type | I/O Type | Supported
------|------------------|-------------|------------
  10g | ext2/ext3 | Async I/O | Yes
       |------------------|-------------|------------
       | raw | | Yes
       | OCFS | | No(*)
       | NFS | | No
       |------------------|-------------|------------
       | ext2/ext3 | Direct I/O | Yes

       | NFS | | Yes
------|------------------|-------------|------------

(*)
On Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS)
Async I/O works on OCFS 1.0.9-4 and higher for RedHat
kernel e.24 and higher
but It's not supported and should not be used
(**)
For Oracle9i you need to download <patch:2448994>
- Abstract: DIRECT IO SUPPORT OVER NFS
(***)
If you are using the 9iR2 installed on RedHat Enterprise
Linux RHEL 3.0 you must install the 9.2.0.4 patchset or higher
and download from metalink and install the <patch:3016968>
- Abstract: Asyncio Functionality is not Working on RHEL 3

I hope this clarifies your question.

Subject: [ILUG] Oracle and best Filesystem?
From: "Conor Wynne" <weeboy at conorwynne.com>

Hi all,

I am doing some data moving work, from a running RHEL3 box to a new RHEL3.
The server in question has ext2 as the filesystem for Oracle data. Hmm,
I'm not happy about that so would like something else.

Yes I can use RAW, OCFS is overkill as its not a RAC server, so I was
wondering about XFS?

Anyone recommend something?
