Never mind, I fixed it. Just in case anyone's having similar problems,
some applications seem to get upset by the DNS caching system in the
Cayman Netopia ADSL equipment that eircom uses; just set the DNS to
ericom's own in resolv.conf, and set dhcp not to get DNS.
