You're on the right track, but you probably want to be writing to
/etc/courier/userdb and using makeuserdb to create
/etc/courier/userdb.dat from it (courier reads a database file for
speed/scalability rather than a flat text file). I believe there is
also a userdb command for safely manipulating this file (although
you're welcome to script it or use your own editor too).
