Hi AJ
Following our telephone conversation, I'd like to confirm what I said
for you.
I think the confusion came from a combination of me being asked by
Morning Ireland to keep away from computer terms, and also getting cut
off mid-thought (by someone who I couldn't see and who could close my
microphone).
First of all I didn't say, and didn't mean, that linux users in general
are responsible for mydoom or any other virus, and I didn't say anything
that could have been reasonably mistaken for that.
I tried to draw an analogy between MS's handling of Apple and Netscape
and their attitude now to open source. I'm sure you will agree that
there is at the very least antipathy between the two camps.
>From the choice of targets (SCO and MS) I think it is fair to guess
that the creator of mydoom leans more towards one side of this argument
than the other. I didn't get to finish that point so it probably sounded
incomplete, but I didn't say anything incorrect.
If you have an alternative explanation, that is fine, but it is no more
or less valid than mine.
By contrast, I am being para-quoted on your message boards as saying
"SCO was attacked, ergo it was done by Linux users, ergo Linux is evil."
I said nothing of the sort.
In any event you are entitled to express your point of view and I am
entitled to express mine. What you are not entitled to do is impugn my
professional reputation, so I'd ask you to take out the pejorative
statements on your website.

You will note that it is your responsibility, not mine, to find and
remove defamatory statements from your website.
In addition, your press release is completely wrong to state "Mr
Campbell stated he suspected the open source community of developing and
deploying this software." I never said that.

Hi,
I'm not sure who was listening to Morning Ireland on RTE Radio 1 this
morning but there was a piece just before 8am about the mydoom virus
given
(as an interview) by William Campbell of BUA Training.
http://www.rte.ie/news/morningireland.htmlhttp://www.buatraining.com/Personnel.htm
Not only did it show William Campbell to be horrifically ill-informed,
but
what he did say was downright slanderous of OSS, Linux and
OpenOffice.org.
The impression one got was that Campbell had never heard of OSS and had
been coached by one of his tech department in the half hour run up so he
could talk about this Lynux thing and openoffice.org attacking Microsoft
and someone called SCO. He basically made the OSS community sound like
a
bunch of spoilt children who were trying to attack Microsoft. David
Hanley
compounded it by getting him to agree that "this is an act of hatred by
"
OSS.
I wouldn't like to be in a meeting recommending OSS software this
morning.
Gavin
This is just inaccurate. I didn't refer to OSS, I was referring to the
creators of the virus. It is also libellous.
I look forward to your early reply.
Regards,
William Campbell
