[ILUG] Kernel 2.6.1 -> network script and sound issues

Hi all,

I'm running kernel 2.6.1, which amazingly is faster than I expected - Must
be the pre-emptive kernel stuff but it is noticable on my fedora box.

Anyway, some minor issues.

1. The scripts which drive the eth interfaces are no longer working.
The driver loads fine as I can manually do

ifconfig -a eth0 ipaddress and that works grand, yes I know ifconfig is
deprecated and I'll start using ip soon.

2. The sound no longer works. I realise that alsa has replaced OSS and so I
have installed the alsa rpms from fedora.
alsaconf detects my sblive and I can up and down the channels. I have not
tried running xmms or anything as root, should have.
As a normal user, all apps tell me I cannot open dev/mixer. Permissions
issue? But dev/mixer does not seem to exist!

I'm googling but so far no luck.

Help me Obi-Wan.
Conor.

p.s.: I had to babysit on friday, could not make the POTD.
