I just came across this
http://www.mackers.com/projects/o2sms/

it's a command line frontend to the o2, vodafone and meteor
free web sms's. 

So you can just do (numbers removed to protect the innocent)

greg at greg:~$ vodasms colm darragh sam gary ross justin

[ recipient(s) : colm () darragh () sam () gary () ross () justin () ]
Xbox and cans at my gaff around 7 sound ok? Then head into town

dead handy, and saves me money. Obviously you need a phone from one of
those providers already :)
