Has anyone compiled vanilla kernel 2.4.24 under SuSE?
I have two identical (nearly) Sony C1VFK Picturebooks.
(I got the second cheaply on eBay -
it has a fault with its charging mechanism
but I'm pretty sure that's not relevant here.)
The good machine is running under Fedora-1,
and the bad machine under SuSE-8.
I tried compiling exactly the same kernel
with the same config file on both.
It compiles OK on both machines,
and runs fine on the good machine
(I'm using it now).
But on the bad machine the boot fails
because of some fault with the IDE driver.
It recognises the drive (Toshiba)
and the partitioning,
but thereafter fails to read the drive.
It puts me in single user mode,
and fdisk says it can't read /dev/hda .
The kernel that comes with SuSE works fine,
as does 2.4.22 which I compiled some time ago
(and also Windows-2000).
All the associated programs mentioned in
Documentation/Changes are up to the required versions.
Can any of you gurus help me?
Incidentally, the fault with the charger
is that the battery continues to discharge
(as shown by the power light)
when the computer is switched off.
If anyone has any suggestions on that score
I would be very grateful.
