  | Just bought an Epson Stylus C64 (Photo Edition) - E99 in Dixon's.
  | Works fine on a well-known closed source proprietary OS.
  | I'm running Fedora Core 1.0 [ ... and it isn't working ... ]
  | Any suggestions?

I dunno how well know it is, but Epson does provide
utilities and “drivers‟ for printers et.al., as (as
far as I can recall) under the GPL; at any rate the
source is (was?) available for free (as in beer).

the website is a bit obscure, try (I am _not_ 100%
this is the right one, sorry!):

 yer kiloage will probably vary!

whether or not this will help with yer problem I
have no idea; the EPKowa stuff, whilst a bit funky,
does work fine Ok with my el cheapo Epson printer
 here at home.

cheers!
