this is the true stupidity of ooo replies to non-work addresses in
general and ooo replies to publically archived mailing lists in
particular. i haven't looked into it a lot, but the messages seem
vaguely similar - close enough that google will find them.
all the enterprising thief needs to do is get a list of mailing lists
with many members in their area and search the archives. or post to
those lists and see what ooo replies come back. with that you'll get
a list of people who are likely on holidays and who might have things
you want to steal/fence (particularly with some specialised list topics).
on long trips most people have someone collect their mail or have the
post office hold their mail. they do not have a recorded message saying
they're away when someone presses their doorbell. i think a similar logic
should apply to email. not that i want to inflict common sense on people.
