 well, it turns out I am 100% wrong --- the (old,
 low-end printer) software I downloaded and use
 _is_ just a wrapper, as Paul postulated.

 I can't quite reproduce how I came to last night's
 wrong conclusion (can I blame the wine?  great!
 (so was the wine (hey, this is France!))), but
 suspect it was something as stup^H^H^Hilly as
 just looking at thw source part of the package,
 and hence only seeing source ....  ;-\  

 anyways, yes, the EPKowa stuff (and the Epson
 printer) works Ok, but it is an Open Source
 “wrapper‟, not fully Open ....
