It's vagely possible it's the vfat format itself. See kernel traffic at
http://www.kerneltraffic.org and look at the report for the kernel list on
February 12th, item 2. The patch gives an additional option for vfat
mounting that might help.
You could reformat it as ext2, but lets face it, the stick is then useless
for any non-Linux machine.
