I'd definately say go with Fedora. It has all the latest software (e.g.
KDE 3.1 etc) as well as being very "pretty" - including a new X based
graphical boot.
Also, apt-get is available for Fedora:
http://apt.freshrpms.net/
and a local repository on HEANet.
