it depends on the browser, of course :)
try it for yourself:
https://mail.investici.org/ - this is a cert signed by a non-known
certification authority
https://www.ecn.org/ - this is a self-signed certificate
the worst case was I-don't-remember-which version of IE for Mac who
by default simply doesn't connect to a non-trusted SSL site, without
issuing any warning - it just won't work.
