Yeah... I'm trying to get to terms with the fact that I have 4
production FreeBSD systems that haven't been maintained consistently
since installation ... are ... ohh two years behind the times... in
desperate need of syncing with the current 4 stream ... in need of a
build world after that... I've been playing with OpenBSD (which I like)
on my lappy to this end... it's a big chasm from a noddy OpenBSD
(current version) and a build world to getting a FreeBSD 4.2 box.. up to
4.9 (with <=0 amount of customer facing downtime).... No sarcasm
intended.
Given this backdrop, discontinuation of Red Hat (the fact that the only
people trusted to change the Unix systems are acutally employed as
programmers and can't justify the time spent fixing things)... <moan
moan>... it would be really great to have this problem disappear.
I'm a fan of Gentoo, but, installing a Gentoo system by and large is a
24 hour job.... it's not popular and the next techie is likely to hate
it and want to install Red Hat or Debian... I like Slackware too <petrol
goes here>.
For me, it's that we (as advocates) look a bit stoopid... having said
(Red Hat is great blah, blah) only to have to eat crow now, when it's
discontinued, and try to state a case for management accepting that 'yes
the techies know best and commercial support is not needed/welcome. That
use of Linux *BSD system (n) is the right way'.
>From where I sit, if Debian is good enough for the ILUG webserver and
heanet, it should be good enough for most companies... I could live with
an old version of Apache... so long as I could be gauranteed it would be
secure and stable.
I like the company I work for, but, they are 99+% non-technical and they
import talent like me from Dublin, because the local IT's idea of a Unix
course falls about a million miles short of what they need doing down
here.... would installing Red Hat... make their lives easier when myself
and the other talent go on to greener/other pastures ... considering
that the four Red Hat servers down here (again in need of upgrade) won't
be supported by the vendor soon implying a system rebuild at some
point.. and the already pretty much iredimable situation with the 4
FreeBSD boxes.... I'm thinking that, it is for me time to commit
seppuku... rather then face the shame/bad vibes of telling all that,
==>Yes, I have to reinstall all the Linux boxes so that we don't get bit
in the ass with them in a year and a half... like we are getting bit
with the unmaintained FreeBSD boxes... ahh... deploying Red Hat
'everywhere' gradually was supposed to fix all this...
