Hmm, recently switched to CUPS myself on Debian Linux. I use 'enscript'
instead of a2ps as follows in my ~/.muttrc file

 set print_command="/usr/bin/enscript -2 -r --fancy-header=mp"

and then I created a ~/.enscriptrc file and put in a single line saying

 Spooler: /usr/bin/lp

As CUPS uses lp, not lpr
