Not sure what you doing with that machine, but my RH9 (lots of additional rpms
installed on mine) install will bring Gnome desktop fully up after login in
about 5-7s.
Also, Linux boots up fairly quickly for me, but then again I have made sure
that Kudzu and some other services don't run on boot up.
