I think it very much depends on what exactly you're doing in Chemistry. My
sister has a PhD in chemistry and I'm reasonably sure she did no programming
through out her research project. I do know that those in my family who do
lots of number crunching (and I mean the sort of number crunching you kick off
at 9am in the hope of getting a result when you come back from a late lunch)
swear by Fortran.
