Okay, now imagine that your disk drives are in a datacentre, where 
there's a bunch of extremely loud air conditioners, and probably 
hundreds or thousands of other pieces of equipment, all making their 
own noises.  What chance do you have of detecting an "odd noise" from 
one disk?
