The FISH protocol is a little-known treasure; thanks for mentioning it.
By the way, it's usable by more than just Konqueror; Konq gains access
to it via the kio_fish "ioslave" plugin library available in KDE 3.1 and
later core libs. Other KDE apps can also use that plugin.

mc and lftp also do FISH access via their own subroutines for that
purpose. (If anyone hears of other implementations, I'd appreciate
hearing about it. It's difficult to google for _relevant_ hits on
"FISH protocol"; you end up reading a great deal about hatcheries.
In particular, the GNOME guys should have something cooking, since
they had a gnome-vfs ssh module written a/o last October.)
