yup glibc-kernheaders was what was required the kernel-headers seems to 
have been a slight red herring!

now when trying to run ./configure for Qt im getting

gmake: g++ : Comand not found
gmake: *** [project.o] Error 127
qmake failed to build. Aborting

So im guessing this is some sort of compiler failure .  Is something 
else missing?
