[ILUG] updating a little musing and a question

Hi,

For reasons to humorous to go into last Monday I got a new hard drive
and having a backup of my data from my old hard dive I commenced an
install. 

When I was finished the install and established a firewall, then it was
time to connect the box to the Internet and grab my email. 

I checked my security updates for the platform I am on in the SOHO, I
noted that they were plentiful and I waded through them for all of the
operating systems I have in my care. (OT but Mostly Linux.) 

I got to wondering what is the best situation, obviously do not install
that you will not use. However I use a lot of stuff. 

What is bugging me is what do most people do, okay we could all build a
box from scratch using kernel dot org but that is not the usual method.

So what I am wondering what are the applications that people find
installed by default and never used. i.e. for me it is sendmail, when I
want make my own mail server it is always postfix. [Please do not make a
call on this on religious grounds] I do not work for a location that
needs that complexity and frankly postfix does lovely for me. 
More of my thinking is visible if you understand that I like to use two
browsers on the desktop at a time. Firefox and Konqueror, just because I
use KDE more than Gnome. Evolution for some of my mail, mutt for the
rest.
But that is me. You have your choices and they will be different, I am
just curious what are your top 6 business and top 6 non business
programs outside the of the kernel and its config tools, perl, g++,
system config tools unless they are for managing apache etc and window
manager, that you must have to live with your Linux box?
I would like to compile this list, and then present it back to the LUG.
You can reply on list or off list I will accumulate the results and see
how we go. 
It would mean a lot to me if you would think about this and reply in the
following fashion to make it easy for me to do totals. If you do not
have 6 items then your top  applications none the less.

BTW these are not mine just examples of what might be there.
