Thanks, but either leads to the same "hanging" behaviour.
Once I've tried mounting once, anything that involves scanning the usb
sockets seems to hang in a similar fashion also - this means that the
Mandrake Control Centre won't start, cdrecord's scanbus gets stumped,
and trying cat /proc/scsi/scsi gives the same no-output-no-exit result.
