That is worrying.

To me if that were a hard disk that would = some sort of breakage on the disk 
itself... like a head crash or similar resulting in a scratch, resulting in a 
read error later on.

*I suppose* it's possible there is something in your USB drivers or usb-storage 
drivers that has changed between 2.4 and 2.6 which would make this error go away.

But, if this were a hard disk we were talking about, that dmesg error would 
almost unequivocally imply a scratched or otherwise non-functional hard disk.

All things being equal, I'd say that's exactly what it means when it comes to a 
usb mass storage device too.
