I don't know. I used to think so, but lately I've been looking at his
work with a more sophisticated and critical eye, and I now see less
insight, more ego-massage and more plain old wishful thinking. Much of
the problem with his newer work is basically that he's blinded by his
gun-totin'-libertarian ideas, and nothing is allowed to intrude which
might present any contrary evidence. When he refrains *entirely* from
amateur anthropologism, his technical observations can be astute (but
not exceptional), and these days it's getting harder to separate
Eric-the-sensible-advocate from Eric-the-loony-gun-nut.
