 as an FYI, there is also at least one site which will do
 a scan for being an open mail rely.  from my notes ....

    Subject: open mail rely test

    1. Log onto your mail server.
    2. As root [ bletch! -blf], issue the command:
         telnet relay-test.mail-abuse.org
    3. Wait for it to finish and read the final message.
       It will tell you if your server is an open relay
