Thanks for the responses. They helped me to find out that
I had overlooked the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" setting
at the bottom of the Edit=>Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings menu
(after clicking on Windows=>Mail & Newsgroups in Mozilla).
(In self-defence, I had assumed everything would be in
Mail=>Server Settings .)
