Well, I noticed marked improvements going from
Mandrake 9.2 -> Fedora Core 1 with 2.4 kernel
and from
Mandrake 9.2 -> Mandrake 10.0 with 2.6 kernel
So it could be that similar improvements are happening with gentoo, and
that it has nothing to do with compiling from source: things like kernel
enhancements, preloading, nptl, newer versions of KDE / GNOME...
Or maybe Mandrake 9.2 was just slow :)
Anyway, it's nice to see an operating system that actually gets faster
with each release ;)
