Believe I came arross some that sounds exactly the same when I upgrade from RH9
to FC1. Somewhere along the line one of my graphics libraries got lost, can't
remember whic,h but its disappearence prevented metacity from starting. As a
result I could start the applications but they were all missing the surrounding
window so I couldn't resize or move any of the windows around the desktop.
Have you tried starting metacity (or sawfish if its installed) manually to see
if they output any errors on what their missing, and then start working from
there to see if the missing file/package is installed.
If I remeber correctly I couldn't locate any general messages in the logs as to
why metacity was failing to load, only when I started it manually from the
command line did it give any clues.
btw, I didn't bother fixing it, other things had gone wrong so I just tar'ed up
my user files and did a fresh install of FC1. My RH9 had so much additional
software installed it was somewhat bloated and a mess.
