You seem to be reading much more into what I sad than was intended.
Somebody (you?) suggested that one reason to get a new machine
was to compile the kernel more quickly,
and I simply pointed out that in fact the increase in speed
will probably disappoint you if that is what you want the machine for.

If and when my 450MHz Pentium desktop dies
(which is probably quite soon as it is showing signs of senility)
I will probably buy another Asus SCSI machine,
for the simple reason that this one has been remarkably hardy.
I've only been moderately impressed by the Dell machines I've used.
The CPU speed will not be my main criterion,
as I very rarely sit at the desktop
which is just a gateway to the internet.
I value reliability far more than speed.

My Sony Picturebook is also suffering from heart disease
(lost hda interrupt) but sadly Sony have stopped making this machine.
If the Picturbook dies I'll amost certainly get a Fujitsu P5000.
(Unless I can find a computer science student with long thin fingers
to change the disk.)

CPU speed is the computer equivalent of
"This car goes from 0mph to 120mph in 20 seconds".
