What does a netstat -tanp tell you?
Anything in your log -files
Are you sure the firewall is turned off - if you are using iptables,
then what does iptables --list tell you?
Are you using a local server such as postfix for mail for just a client
attaching to pop/imap? Have you got anything in hosts.deny, hosts.allow?
