Have you tried simply moving everything in $HOME to a sub dir including the
.files? I've seen similar problems before (cant remember what error I was
getting but it would log me out as soon as I logged in) and moving the
contents of $HOME to $HOME/tmp worked. Leave .profile, .bashrc, .history,
... or better yet move them and then copy in new files from /etc/skel. Then
if it doesnt work, simply move all you files back into $HOME, and if it does
move everything back in but dont overwrite anything. Use cp -i
