[ILUG] "Kernel Panic" message

[ILUG] "Kernel Panic" message

Hi all,

Am in a spot of bother here.....

Went in to work this morning to find that my screen on the server appeared
to be frozen - mouse wouldn't move, etc. Nothing I did provoked any level of
response. So, I performed the cardinal sin of re-booting the pc (used the
button on the front as keyboard wasn't working).

So, anyway, Ihaven't been able to boot up the server since. The startup
procedure gets as far as starting LILO, then checking for drives. It then
freezes with:

<0>Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!

In idle task - not syncing

There's also a whole pile of numbers etc spewedout before this.

What could be wrong? Hard disk failure? Dodgy memory? Stck fan?

My system is a tad on the old side (Pentium 200Mhz, 64MB Ram,SuSE 6.4) so it
wouldn't surprise me if it was "on the way out"

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm gonna have some irate users
tomorrow (managed to stall them today!)

Mike
