Can also be heat related. My home machine started locking up
during CPU-intensive activity (OGG ripping was a pretty reliable
cause, as was running a VAX emulater or even doing multiple
kernel compiles in parallel). It was steadily getting worse.
Saturday I pulled off the heatsink, cleaned off the HS and CPU
and stuck in a new grease pad. CPU core temp dropped 7 degrees
as reported by lm_sensors.
