| Dear Donncha
|
| Thanks for your previous respones.
|
| I am writing in case you live in Galway:
|
| I´m still atempting to get modem working with Mandrake 10.0.... I will
give
| you some info and if you have any advice please pass it on.
| The modem is a PCTEL 2304 WT V.92 MDC (this modem co. was bought by
| Conexant
| (web address http://pctelcompdb.sourceforge.net/ ). At this web site many
| people have responded with their experiences (mostly successful) of
| installing the modem on their laptop. Some of them refer to a "gcc"
| problem
| and the necessity of a "forced insertion" (-f) i.e. insmod -f pctel
|
| My problem is that I am new to Linux. These tweaks are all done in the
| terminal screen which is quite unfamiliar to me. I am happy to learn fast
| and try anything and would prefer this to purchasing an external modem. A
| friend has been helping a bit but is only slightly more experienced than
| me.
|
| I have discovered that the modem that works in most cases is version 9.6
| and
| I have a copy of this. It needs to be unzipped and this is an unfamiliar
| process to me in Linux. I obviously need some help to accomplish this
| installation.
|
| I live in Galway. If you also live in Galway (Renmore) and have an
hour or
| so to spare to help me this would be greatly appreciated. I could visit
| your place or vice versa. If you don´t live in Galway but know
someone who
| does then please suggest someone.
|
| If no help is available and the best solution would be to buy an external
| modem can you recommend an inexpensive usb or PCMIA modem that would
not be
| too problematic to install.
|
| If you visit the above website maybe you will have an idea about the
| installation process.
|
| Thanks for your help so far and any response would be appreciated.

I live in West Connemara and should be in Galway at some stage next week
if no-one else lives closer, though I have no experience of Mandrake,
being a SuSE man myself :)
