Thanks, I'm sure you are right.
I did actually look briefly at the NY end, but missed this file.

OK, here are the full details.
I am looking at today's issue of the NY Times (with kmail).
I click on the headline "M.P.'s Received Orders to Strip Iraqi Detainees"
and I get a request (in Mozilla) to login.
I give my username and password as registered with NYTimes,
and am told, as before:
"The file /auth/login cannot be found.
Please check the location and try again."

OK, so there is another route.
At the top of the NYTimes email it says:
"If you have trouble reading this e-mail,
go to http://www.nytimes.com/todaysheadlines "
which I do.
Now I get a more detailed picture of the NY TImes front page,
and when I click on the same headline
I do indeed go to the article in question,
which I am able to read without problem,
even going to the second page.

I can go back to the front page by clicking on "Home" on the page,
and in fact can navigate through the paper without problem in this way.

However, if instead I click on the "Back" button
I get the error message:
"The file /var/tmp/kdecache-tim/krun/7790.0.todaysheadlines
cannot be found.
Please check the location and try again."
And there is indeed no such file, only a similar file from yesterday:
============================================
56 -rw-rw-r--  1 tim tim 50902 May 17 18:04 3586.0.todaysheadlines
============================================

Could this be a problem with Mozilla?
In desperation I tried to read the Daily Telegraph on line,
but again I failed to register -
this time I was told repeatedly that I had to give an 11-digit phone number
which was exactly what I had given.

Everything else seems to work fine.

I look forward to receiving words of wisdom from the gnomes of ILUG.
