a) sun contributes to various oss projects. for the most part, sun is
supportive of several applications and systems that linux also uses.
b) many core "linux" things are actually sun things: nfs, nis, some of
the gnu utils have extensions beyond posix that were inspired by sun
extensions.
c) most questions you might have about solaris are applicable to linux
as well. in this case choice of ftp daemons, umask, etc.
d) it's a good idea for linux application developers to be aware of
other unix systems. it makes you keep portability in mind. various
unixes have slight differences in file ownership and permissions
for instance.
many linux users use linux because it is a unix (in spirit if not in
trademark law or standards body conformence tests). i happen to be
one of those types. every unix has warts - os x not using x11, solaris
being to sysv-y, linux changing its packet filtering every release, etc.
for the most part though, they are similar enough. and troubleshooting
skills in one are handy in another.
i don't think the same can be said for windows or most windows
applications - or macos up to os x.
