that is just wierd, make sure CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE is also set in your
.config,
I don't see what XFree4.4 is doing wrong, my best guess is your card is
knackered on a hardware level, or is trying AGP speeds beyond your
motherboard, you might try setting
Option AGPMode 1
in your /etc/X11/XF86Config.. in the radeon driver section..
