If you boot off the XP cd, select setup XP, it will detect existing XP
installs (if there are any left), you then have the option of running a
repair on this previous install. This will check all system files, boot
sector, etc and should fix your problem. You may need to re-install
apps after this. Also you will need product key again and may need to
re-activate xp.
OR
Boot off cd, setup xp, go to recovery console (looks like a command
prompt) and try commands fixboot or fixmbr. It can't get any worse, can
it ;-)
